I got a new workshop!

Postby DrewP » Mon Nov 21, 2011 12:12 am

I signed papers for this 1500 sq-ft warehouse this week!!! :woohoo:

It's about 6 blocks from where my new job is (35 miles from my apartment), but I will be able to kill a few hours there after work and wait for traffic to die down nicely.

Over the weekend I had the wife and one of my co-workers help me move all of my stuff out of my storage unit and into the new space.

There's still a lot of things I will need to pick up to make if a fully functional battle station, but I already have 4 jobs lined up before Christmas to make some extra walking around money (and I'm only doing cool vintage performance stuff now - no more oil changes and brake pad jobs for this guy!)

First was to get some 99's loaded onto the trailer. The new white '73 was a little challenging, because the LF tire would doesn't hold any air any more, tire is too far gone, so we couldn't even push it out behind the trailer.

I enlisted the halp of the wife, and of the 9-5 to drag it into position.

Hooray!

Image

9-5's have a sweet little towing eye on the trunk floor, a little ring welded to a stout bracket. After some knot-tying refreshers, and experimenting with ratchet straps....

We are in position!

Wife learns how ratchet straps work, then secures the car.

Rock & roll.

One trip back and forth, and we repeat with the race car:

Plopped into the new man cave!

The unit is 45' deep, and I have parts and milk crates of stuff 2'-3' off the wall the whole lengh, plus my tools against the other wall. Lots of organization will be happening.

Yay! I can work on old SAABs again!

Congrats Drew. Nice score on the unit. You have space for quite a few more cars now

wow, thats a pretty killer space! If you are anything like me, not having the ability to work on projects and express yourself through mechanical art, well, is hell.
Hopefully you'll be able to at least have the sidework float the rent or at least subsidize it.

I'd trade for your sweet little carriage barn next to your place any day, so much more character.

Exactly.

The real nice thing is that it's so close to work that I can pop back and forth to use all of our machine tools, we can use the shop after hours and we're pretty well stocked.

Awesome!
At one point I was trying to figure out if I could rent and live in a garage/office area that's up the road from where I work (something like 4000 sq ft, half garage, half livable area).

Maybe you should set up a cot for late nights on the car.
The kind of dirty that doesn't wash off :eyebrows:

The wife already thinks it would be cool to live in one of those de-constructed ex-industrial live/work lofts with a roll-up door at street level and work space for the bottom floor, and living quarters lofted up.

I could probably change her mind when I have to massage cage fitment with an angle grinder at 2am though...

For late nights here I'm thinking string a hammock up somewhere, and not compromise any floor space that could be occupied by Saabs.

My place just looks like it has character from the outside. Inside it looks like this.

haha I wish. No seriously I'm glad I have some space, but I'd love to have flat concrete floors and something well lit and a wee bit more space to walk around in and put stuff.

Replace these with 99's and 900's and this is what I dream about.

Aww nards... :silent:

I love clean workshops, but I bet the foreman is a hardass - the only hardass in my shop can be me, else I quit and get a job working across town....
