Tire dilemma

Postby aireeca » Sat Dec 08, 2007 5:55 pm

OK, here's the story....

I'm the gal who is going on a little drive through the Canadian woods in August with Paul and Delorean. I believe I have my base c900 acquired but here's where it gets tricky.

The car is in Minneapolis with a friend and has two bald all-seasons on the back and two el-cheapo snows on the front.

I'll have studded snows for when it gets to Connecticut but I can't ship them out there for transit back because of some Minnesota state law/titling/Connecticut inspection issues - long story that thankfully I really don't have to do with much at all.

So, I'm looking for tires that will do good on the trip from Minneapolis to Connecticut, not be dedicated snows and be up for the challenge of many, many miles of gravel roads next summer.

Suggestions?

sam's club special snows, I use them in the mud/gravel/ice/snow. They work pretty well and don't cost an arm and a leg.

you could also check the local (to the car) craigslist pages. There are alwayspeople in rochester selling saabs size tires or saab rims with tires.

Ah, see the tires need to be acquired in or around the Twin Cities so they can be on the car for the trip to New England. I'll consider the Sam's Club option....

Does craigslist not cover that area? You could also look in the local paper's classifieds (via the web).

Call some of the local tire shops and see if they can offer you a good deal or special order the tires you want.

I second the local tire shop option. It worked well for me when I was on my trip. It seems that they have pretty decent used tires on a regular basis. I even got a nice Good Year mounted on my spare at a truck stop in Arizona at 3 in the morning for $20.

I'd say just go for some old fashioned style snow tires like coopers with big tread. They arent the best in ice, but they are cheap and they are better in mud and gravel than the modern ice tires.

Try Andrews Inc. of Princeton. They are an independent SAAB garage located just north of the twin cities so they may have new and good used wheels/tires in stock for your 900.
