99 Brake upgrades

Postby GRMPer » Sun May 20, 2007 6:06 am

So, what parts are needed to upgrade to the vented rotors from a 85-86
900 Turbo?

I found a 86 turbo in the junkyard with vented rotors..and the "old school" caliper design. Just trying to figure out what I need to grab.

Also, there's a guy on ebay selling rebuilt calipers for cheap.

You only need the rotors and calipers. The caliper frames are wider to allow the rotor clearence. You will also need the vented pads as they are not as thick as the standard pads or you can face the standard ones to fit.

if you are swapping 900 brake and hub parts onto your 99 then you will need the entire wheel hub assembly from the 900. If the donor car has the vented rotors then you will need the calipers as well since the calipers are different on the vented rotor cars then the non....if you plan on running the vented rotors that is. You will also need the 900 outer CV joints but you will need to keep your 99 drive axles.

I thought you only needed rotors and calipers to swap to the old style 900 brakes? I know to swap to the post 87 brakes you need all that other stuff. I am sure that I am incorrect though.

Yes, the entire knuckle assembly with be required for the swap. Basically grab everything from the 86 turbo between the two ball joints including the outer CV. Bolt on to 99 (using 99 axle shaft and inner CV). Done.

you may find the 99 drive shafts are different where the cv clips in!

Yeah, when I did the swap, I remember there are some additional washers or snap rings that you just remove when you put on the 900 CV

Just so I can explain it clearly, what is the dimensional differences that require the different hubs? Offset of rotor? caliper bolt spacing?

Ok if we want to get specific here: the actual knuckle assembly is identical from 81-87. 99 and 900 up to '80 are completely different internally. Changing rotors requires pulling the hub apart. In '81 they changed to a different design with a new style wheel bearing and easily replaceable rotors. Then in 86 on the turbo and in 87 on the turbo and the "S" they fitted ventilated rotors. The knuckle is the same as for the 81+ solid rotors... but the offset on the carrier flange is different (the thing the wheel actually bolts to) It looks like this (well actually this is the rear but just so you get the idea of what we are talking about)

So if for some theoretical reason you had only carrier flanges for a vented setup, but 81+ knuckles for a solid rotor you could press out the wheel bearings and swap the outer flanges to build a vented setup.

Ok, I still have these vented rotors/hubs/calipers sitting in my shed and I'm waiting for my 'off season' (anything after STPR) to get this done. Does anybody have the outer 900 CVs/stub axle that I can buy at STPR?

Worst case you can buy new ones at eeuro for $89 part number 9102880G

I replace mine with brand new ones as preventative maintainance every year.

Sweet, I didn't realize the CV joint came with the stub axle. Ordered, thanks again Luke!

The ice racers/roundy round 99/900 guys recommended this stuff for CV grease:
http://www.redlineoil.com/products_coolant.asp?subCategoryID=8
They run welded diffs and haven't ever had a CV failure. It makes sense to use that while you're at it.

I use the redline grease too, seems good.
