Talking to a guy in Portland, OR who builds and rallies 96s. He quoted me $450 to do a replica of the Sport & Rally skid plate, he's built many of them. Sounds like a fair price, my only concern is that if evidently will not fit with an MSS Y-shaped header which is what I have. I'm asking him if it can be modified to work.

It's a pretty sturdy piece:

Also, trying to figure out what to do about tires and wheels. I have some very nice Hankook 185/60/15 snow tires but the widest rim I have is a 4.5 Sonett soccerball and that is a bit of a squeeze. Wondering if widening a set of steelies would be my best option.

Does Summit or Jegs or Speedway Motors carry a 5-lug universal steel wheel in the right bolt pattern for the 96? I don't remember what the bolt pattern is or I'd check myself. 5x120 maybe? I think the bolt circle is even bigger than that.

You could also convert to GT850 hubs that use the 4-lug 4x114.3 pattern like the 99's used, if you can find a set.

It's a pretty weird pattern, I don't know it off-hand but it's close to earlier air-cooled VWs. I would definitely convert to the four-bolt hubs if I could find some but they are made of unobtanium.

The V4 is 5x170mm (5 x 6" 4/5)
Very close to the Landrover stud pattern
I have some specs for adaptors to convert to 99 patten if you would like them .
or I have posted in your other thread re wide steels !

Okay, I've sold the black '70 so I can focus on my efforts on building this car which will also see rallycross use.

You might fint the MSS will come down each side and the Y meet behind the guard. Nick's headers came from the US, I remember him ordering them, see below.......

I sold the '70 which has the MSS exhaust. I'm running a Simmons/Jetex system on my '72, evidently it's a copy of one of the Sport & Rally items:

The '72 will be getting a skid plate.

You probably want something more like the group 1 guard in the Sport and Rally book.

Do you have any pics of the Group 1 guard? I'm only familiar with the one that I posted a pic of above.

This is the group 1:
Looks like the main difference is for the exhaust, since grp 1 did not allow changes to the exhaust routing.

Vs grp2:
